Company Profile
TRC Ltd was formed in 1987, and specialises in training and consultancy
in the sustainable development of human and natural resources. Initial
work focused on natural resource development and included project
management in countries such as Mongolia, Tanzania, Mexico and
Cameroon. At that time the Company was closely associated with the
University of Edinburgh. TRC’s natural resource development work is now
centred upon an informal consortium, called the Development Network.
TRC Training & Personnel Development was established as the
company’s Management Training Division in 1992, when activities
included the training of personnel in Scottish institutions such as the
Scottish Office, the Children’s Panel, the old Lothian Regional
Council, Edinburgh City Council, East Lothian Council and the Lothian
& Borders Police.
In 1995 TRC opened an office in Canterbury, where it started to work in
association with the University of Kent at Canterbury (UKC). Close
links were established with the Kent Institute of Medicine and Health
Sciences (KIMHS), which promotes co-operation between academics and
health professionals in medical education. TRC helped KIMHS develop a
new MSc in Paraclinical Sciences, and carried out Training Needs
Analyses in three National Health Service Trusts in Kent.
In 1997 –98 TRC supported the Applied Statistics Research Unit of UKC
in their work in developing the capacity of the East African
Statistical Training Centre in Dar es Salaam through on-going
programmes of Training the Trainers and Team Building.
In 2000 TRC opened an office in the Kings Hill Institute, University of
Greenwich. The two organisations collaborate to provide education and
development to meet the needs of employers in Kent. We held our first
conference in April 2001 considering the future of Best Value for local
government.

Personnel Training in Scotland
TRC has had contracts with the Scottish Office/Scottish Executive, with
local government organisations in the East of Scotland, East Lothian,
West Lothian
and Mid Lothian, and with the University of Edinburgh. TRC is an
approved provider of training to the City of Edinburgh Council (1996 –
present day) and delivers approximately 50 days of training annually as
part of the Council’s Employee Development Course programme.
The courses currently provided for the Scottish Executive and local
government include Planning & Implementing Change, Career and
Personal Development, Stress Management, Human Resource Management,
Project Management, Creative Thinking & Problem Solving,
Assertiveness and Inter-personal Skills and Team Building.
The Company maintains strong links with the University of Edinburgh
through collaborative work with the Office of Life Long Learning and
Edinburgh Management School. The collaboration has now been formalised
through the launch of the Working Partnership in 1999. The Partnership
provides a range of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses
including some accredited modules. The Partnership is piloting flexible
methods of learning to meet the needs of a mobile work force and ensure
equal opportunities for participants.
Training and Consultancy Projects in Scotland
Developed and delivered Stress Management conferences for all Her Majesties Inspectors in Scotland (1996)
TRC completed a two-year contract with the Management School to provide
training for Field Engineers of the International company Schlumberger.
In 1997-9 this involved the presentation of 25 weeks of management
training courses carried out in Jakarta, Dubai, Paris and Edinburgh.
TRC’s Senior Executive (Judyn Matthewman) is an Associate of the
University of Edinburgh Management School.
Developed a Performance Management System for the Faculty of Advocates,
Faculty Services Ltd. Edinburgh and trained all the managers to
implement the System (1999)
Developed and delivered courses on team building, communication and
stress management, for all the officers for the Forth Road Bridge
Authority (2001)
Developed and delivered a substantial development programme involving
business planning, setting objectives, team building and management
mentoring for the Business Support Team of the Housing Department, City
of Edinburgh Council (2002 – 2003)
Developed and delivered a programme in project management for the Housing Investigation Team (2003)
Designed and led team building events for Treasury and Investment Team,
Supporting People Team, Office of Life Long Learning, University of
Edinburgh (2001 – present day)
Personnel Training in England
TRC provides a range of support for small and medium size businesses
(SMEs). This work involves providing training to meet immediate needs
and more long-term development of businesses. Businesses have used
successfully support such as a training needs analysis; training of
managers to team build or coach others, life coaching or management
mentoring.
TRC always evaluates with clients after the project to ensure that the
planned development has taken place and will be sustainable.
TRC has been working with the Health and Social Care Sector in Kent
since 1995. It has developed material and case studies specific to the
sector. The company provides Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
and support across all the professions involved with the Sector. This
work includes skills development, NVQs in Care, and post-graduate
training.

Business Link Kent/ The Learning and Business Link Co Ltd
TRC has developed a close relationship with the old Learning and
Business Link Co Ltd. and now with its successor Business Link Kent
(BLK). Since 1998, TRC has worked with BLK as partners on specific
projects or as sub-contractors to deliver training consultancy. TRC
currently provides 70 days of training annually as part of BLK’s open
programme of courses.

Kent County Council and District Councils
TRC supported all the staff in the Adult Careers Guidance Team through
a programme of Managing Change (2000 – 2001). It has designed a pathway
to allow short courses to be converted into accredited modules, which
can lead to a BA or an MSc in professional development. TRC provides
Appraisal Training for the Council’s Managers.
TRC worked with the department of social work to produce a report
entitled Social Care Workforce Plan and Strategy for Kent (September
01-March 02)
Post-Graduate Training
TRC developed an MSc in Training, Learning and Development, for University of Edinburgh (1994 – 95).
TRC was involved with KIMHS in designing and delivering an MSc course in Para-Clinical Sciences (1996 – 2001).
TRC provides teaching input on the Certificate in Project Management, University of Greenwich (2001 – present day)
Health and Social Care
With KIMHS, TRC carried out a training needs analysis of the Continuing
Professional Development needs of staff in three NHS Trusts. Provides
on-going management development for the West Kent GP Support Group.
Currently piloting a programme of Managing Change with one large Acute
Trust and two Primary Care Trusts.
TRC Projects in Kent
2001 –2002 Up-skilling the Mature Workforce project in partnership with
the University of Greenwich, funded by the Learning and Skills Council.
2003 – 2004 TRC Action for Attainment social care project, as project
partners to delivering NVQ qualifications and developing clusters of
business to become training groups.
Personnel Training in Other Countries
TRC has carried out work at CICA (the Centre for Research in
Agricultural Sciences) of the University of the State of Mexico in
Toluca, on institutional development, team building and institutional
management. TRC has carried out Project Support work with an
agricultural project in Cameroon. TRC worked with the Applied
Statistics Research Unit (UKC) to train trainers in the Eastern Africa
Statistical Training Centre in Dar es Salaam.
